Green tea has many benefits for everyone, including athletes. Not only does it taste good, it also contains caffeine, which provides an energy and performance boost without the high levels of sugar commonly found in sports drinks. However, what most people don’t know is that green tea also comes with a lot antioxidants, improves endurance, and increases metabolism.
Antioxidants are substances that remove free radicals from the body, which are molecules that do oxidative damage to the body and cause a range of illnesses and diseases. Most teas, mainly black, oolong, and green tea, have a high catechin content, which is a natural phenol antioxidant that inhibit cancer, prevent mental disorders, etc. Green tea has about 25 to 100 times higher antioxidant quality compared to vitamin C and E.
The high antioxidant content in green tea also provides an endurance boost. A 2006 study conducted for the American Journal of Physiology found that green tea enhanced the muscle’s ability to utilise body fat for energy in mice. Endurance exercise performance increase by about 24 percent in mice that took a green tea extract compared to mice that did not take the green tea extract. Green tea does this by stimulating lipid metabolism, which breaks down fat for energy.
By using body fat as energy, green tea can boost metabolism and fat loss. In a study conducted on mice, three groups were fed a high fat diet; the first group exercised regularly, the second group was given green tea extract, and the third group did both. Results showed that the third group experienced more reduction in body mass and abdominal fat mass than the group that did not, thus supporting green tea’s metabolism-boosting effects.
Green tea is an inexpensive and healthy way to promote to enhance athletic performance and fitness goals; the high antioxidant content in green tea leads to both an endurance and metabolism boost. Take care of your health while also staying in tip-top shape by drinking green tea!
